Old vs New Tax Regime: A Framework for Choosing

A practical way to compare the two regimes using your own deductions instead of guesswork.

Candlesticks Desk•
Taxpayers who are eligible can choose between the old regime, which allows many deductions and exemptions, and the new regime, which generally offers lower slab rates with fewer deductions. The better option depends on your own numbers. List the deductions you actually use: home loan interest, provident fund and other eligible investments, insurance premiums, house rent allowance and similar items. Then compute your tax under both regimes for the same income. Revisit the choice every year, because income, loan status and investments change. Salaried individuals can usually switch each year, while the rules for business income are different, so check the latest provisions or speak to a chartered accountant.
