How to Read Sensex and Nifty Moves Before the Opening Bell

Pre-open cues, global markets and institutional flows: a simple routine to frame the trading day.

Sensex and Nifty are broad indicators of how large listed companies are performing, but a single day's move rarely tells the full story. Before the market opens, traders and long-term investors alike look at a handful of cues to understand the likely mood. Start with global markets: overnight moves in US indices, Asian markets in early trade, and SGX/GIFT Nifty indications often set the tone. Next, check crude oil, the US dollar against the rupee and bond yields, because they influence sectors from oil marketing to IT and banking. Then look at institutional activity. Net buying or selling by foreign and domestic institutions can explain why an index moved even when company news was quiet. Finally, scan the corporate calendar for results, board meetings and ex-dates that could move individual heavyweights.
