SIP vs Lump Sum: Choosing a Style That Fits Your Cash Flow

Both approaches can work. Your income pattern, time horizon and temperament usually decide which is more practical.

A systematic investment plan, or SIP, invests a fixed amount at regular intervals, while a lump sum invests the full amount at once. Neither is universally better; each suits different situations. SIPs fit people who earn a monthly salary and want discipline. They spread purchases over time, which reduces the stress of picking an entry point and averages the cost across market ups and downs. A lump sum can make sense when you receive a large amount, such as a bonus or maturity proceeds, and have a long horizon. Some investors split a large amount into a few tranches over several months to soften the timing risk. Whichever route you choose, match the fund category to your goal and time frame.
